In a First for a Government Owned Company Kochi Metro Appoints Transgenders

  • Kochi Metro will employ 23 members from the transgender community. This is the first time a government owned company has formally appointed members of the transgender community.
  • These 23 workers will be a part of the 530 Kudumbasree workers to be employed at 11 stations in the Kochi Metro.
  • While the better educated workers would be posted at ticket counters, the rest will be deputed for housekeeping works, customer relations, parking, gardening and to man the coach-depot canteen.
  •  All of the workers have been appointed after written test and interview and have been imparted training in soft and technical skills.

Home Ministry asks NGOs to open Bank Accounts in Core Banking format

  •  The Home Ministry has instructed 5,845 NGOs to open their accounts in banks having core banking facilities.
  • The NGOs are also required to furnish the account details for real time access of security agencies in case of any discrepancy.
  •  The move is aimed at checking “errant” NGOs especially those organizations receiving foreign funding.
  •  The Home Ministry has mandated the NGOs registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act to have their accounts in either nationalised banks or in a few private banks that has core banking facilities.
  • Around 3,768 NGOs have been told that their accounts in banks does not have core banking facilities.
  •  Another 2,077 NGOs have been instructed to furnish their bank accounts details as such details are not available with the home ministry.
  •  The significance of the move is that the core banking system with all of the branches of the networked banks interconnected would allow the security agencies to access the accounts of the NGOs on real time basis


Dena Bank classifies Videocon loan as ‘bad’

  •  Dena Bank has become the first lender to classify Videocon Industries as a bad loan. With the default on payments, Dena Bank has declared Videocon Industries account as non-performing asset (NPA) in the fourth quarter ended March 2017.
  •  The total exposure of lenders to the electronic goods maker has pegged at approx Rs 40,000 crore.

Railways to acquire EoTT system to run trains without guards

  • The Indian Railways will float global tenders worth over ₹100 crore for acquiring  End of Train Telemetry (EoTT) equipment to run 1,000 trains without guards.
  • This equipment is used to establish communication between the locomotive driver and the last wagon of the train to ensure that the train is running with all coaches/wagons as a complete unit.
  •  EoTT system comprises two units — one unit called cab display unit (CDU) fitted on the locomotive and the other is sense and brake unit (SBU) fitted on the last coach or wagon of the train.


India, US officials discuss strengthening maritime security cooperation

  • Top Indian and American officials discussed ways to strengthen maritime security cooperation during the two-day India-US Maritime Security Dialogue in Rhode Island.
  •  The implementation of the decisions taken at the first Maritime Security Dialogue between the two countries.


Prime Minister to attend UN Vesak Day Celebrations in Sri Lanka

  •  Prime Minister Modi will travel to Sri Lanka to attend the Buddhist festival ‘Vesak Day’ (Buddha Jayanti) that commemorates birth, enlighten and death of Buddha.
  •  This will be Prime Minister Modi’s second visit to Sri Lanka since becoming the Prime Minister. ‘International Day of Vesak’ celebrations will be held in Colombo from May 12 to 14. As a part of the celebrations, International Buddhist Conference will be held in which over 400 delegates from more than 100 countries will participate.
  • Vesak is the most important day in the Buddhist calendar. This is the first time Sri Lanka will host the festival.


India celebrates National Technology Day: 11th May

  •  On 11th May 1998 India achieved a major technological breakthrough by successfully carrying out nuclear tests at Pokhran, Rajasthan.
  • Development Board, Ministry of Science and Technology is celebrating 19th National Technology Day, at Vigyan Bhawan. The theme of the function is “Technology for inclusive and sustainable growth”.
  • The day is being commemorated to celebrate the anniversary of first of the five tests of Operation Shakti (Pokhran-II) nuclear test, held on 11 May 1998 in Pokhran, Rajasthan.
  • The operation was led by the former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
  • After conducting two more tests as a part of the Pokhran-II/Operation Shakti initiative, India was declared as a nuclear state by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  •  On this same day country’s first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 was test flown at Bangalore. India also conducted successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day.
  •  The Trishul missile was developed as a part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  •  The Trishul Missile got inducted by the Indian Army and Indian Airforce. Considering all these technical achievements, 11 May was chosen to be commemorated as National Technology Day.
  •  To commemorate this day, Technology Development Board (TDB) has instituted a National Award. This award is conferred on to various individuals and industries by the President for their successful achievement in commercialization of Indigenous Technology.


Konkona bags Best Director and Best Actress awards at New York Indian Film Festival

  •  Konkona Sensharma has been named the best director for her directorial debut ‘A Death in the Gunj’ and the best actress for ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ at 2017’s New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF).
  • Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, the film festival took place from April 30 to May 7, 2017.


Senior NCP leader A T Pawar Passes away

  • Senior NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Arjun Tulshiram Pawar passed away after prolonged illness.
  • The leader, who had for many years represented Kalwan, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Tribes in Nashik district, lost the 2014 state Assembly election.


Twitter elevates Taranjeet Singh as Country Director for India

  • Microblogging platform Twitter has elevated Taranjeet Singh as its Country Director for India. Mr. Singh was earlier leading the charge for sales and marketing support for Twitter’s advertisers in India.
  • Recently, Twitter had launched a lighter version of its platform ‘Twitter Lite’ for users in India.

Sanjay Mitra Appointed as Next Defence Secretary

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of 1982 West Bengal cadre IAS officer Sanjay Mitra as the next defence secretary.
  •  He will have a fixed tenure of two years.
  • Prior to this appointment, Mitra was the secretary in the ministry of road transport and highways


India’s Harpreet Singh wins bronze in Asian Wrestling Championship

  •  Harpreet Singh has bagged bronze medal in Greco-Roman weight divisions in the Asian Wrestling Championship held at the K.D. Jadhav arena in the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex in New Delhi.
  •  Harpreet clinched the bronze medal after beating his rival Jun Ji Na of China in 80 kg category.

NBA inaugurates academy in India

  •  In a promising step for Indian basketball, the national Basketball Association (NBA) inaugurated its first ever academy in Greater Noida.
  •  This is latest of the several steps that the National Basketball Association (NBA) the governing body of the game in US has taken to promote the game in India over the past few years.
