INTERNATIONAL

Indo-Russian Bilateral Naval Exercise Indra Navy- 2016 begins

  • The 9th edition of Indra Navy exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Navy began on 14 December 2016 in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The exercise will comprise two phases — the Harbour Phase from December 14 to 18 at Visakhapatnam; and the Sea Phase from December 19 to 21 off Visakhapatnam coast.
  • This annual bilateral maritime exercise will continue till 21 December 2016.
  • The main aim of this exercise is to enhance the interoperability between the two navies and develop the common understanding of maritime security operations.
  • During the exercise, the Indian Navy will be represented by INS Ranvir, a guided missile destroyer; INS Satpura, an indigenous frigate; and INS Kamorta, an indigenous anti-submarine warfare corvette.
  • The Russian Federation Navy will be represented by Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhalov, Deputy Chief of Flotilla, Pacific Fleet, and ships from the Pacific Fleet, based at Vladivostok.

  • INDRA is a joint, bi-annual military exercise conducted by India and Russia starting in 2003.

Rajya Sabha passes Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2014

  • It gives effect to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and related matters.
  • In the bill, disability has been defined based on an evolving and dynamic concept and the types of disabilities have been increased from existing seven to 21.
  • It  aims at securing and enhancing the rights and entitlements of disabled persons
  • It provides for imprisonment of at least six months up to two years, along with a fine ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs 5 lakh for discriminating against differently-abled persons.
  • The Union Cabinet had earlier approved these amendments to the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPWD) Bill, 2014, that had replaced the 1995 Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act.

India becomes world’s 4th largest defence spender

  • According to the recently released 2016 IHS Jane’s Defence Budgets report, India has become the world’s fourth largest defence spender.
  • The report published by US research firm IHS Inc, India has surpassed Russia, France, Japan and Saudi Arabia to become the world’s fourth largest defence spender.
  • United States, China, and the UK remain the top three defence spender in the world.
  • India spends some 1.8{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of its GDP on defence. Of this, up to 36{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} is spent on capital acquisition

India signs Grant Agreement with IBRD for additional financing of MSMEs Project

  • India has signed a Grant Agreement of USD 5.19 million with International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for Additional Financing for Financing Energy Efficiency at MSMEs Project- Programmatic Framework for Energy Efficiency .

  • The sixth edition of Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) began in New Delhi.

Andy Murray, Angelique Kerber named ITF players of the year

  • Briton Andy Murray and Germany’s Angelique Kerber were named ITF World Champions on 13th December 2016.
  • Murray won Wimbledon in July and retained his crown in Rio de Janeiro in August. Kerber won the Australian and U.S. Open titles as well as an Olympic silver medal in Rio.
