CPEC becomes reality as Pakistan inaugurates Gwadar port

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the operational activities of the revamped strategic Gwadar port in the south-western Balochistan Province.
  • Starting its journey from Kashghar, the Chinese trade cargo reached Gwadar safely from Gilgit-Baltistan after travelling through the country.
  • Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Pakistan will provide best possible security to foreign investors to enable them to use the Chinese-funded port for international trade.
  • Amid security concerns for foreign workers, the Pakistani army has created a special force to guard the new trade routes and the port, which is located in insurgency-hit Balochistan province where an overnight blast at a shrine killed nearly 50 people.

  • China is building a network of roads and power plants under a project known as China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that is expected to absorb $46 billion in Chinese investment in the coming decades.
  • China is seeking convenient and reliable access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Chinese ships now use the Strait of Malacca, a narrow passage between the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia.
  • The proposed new route would give China access to the Persian Gulf region and West Asia.
  • Gwadar port is located on the Arabian Sea and it occupies a strategic location between South Asia, Central Asia and West Asia.
  • The port is also located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, just outside the Straits of Hormuz.

APEC Forum’s Week starts in Lima, Peru

  • The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum’s Week started at Lima in Peru today bringing together leaders of world’s largest economies, businessmen and investors.
  • A creation of Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, which would include all APEC states, is one of the main topics on the agenda of the 2016 APEC Summit that is widely seen as the premier business event drawing together business and economic leaders of 21 Pacific Rim countries.

Israel President Reuven Rivlin arrives in Mumbai on 6-day visit to India

  • Rivlin landed in Mumbai and then left for Delhi with a delegation of leading agriculture, defence and university figures of Israel.
  • He is expected to visit Chandigarh and Karnal as part of his plan to highlight agri-cooperation.
  • Rivlin is the second president of Israel to visit India in two decades.
  • The first Israeli president to visit India was Ezer Weizman who visited Delhi in 1997.

36th India International Trade Fair begins in New Delhi

  • The fair was inaugurated by the President Pranab Mukherjee.
  • The theme of 2016 IITF is Digital India.
  • 150 companies from 27 countries are taking part in the fair.
  • The 2016 IITF has been organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), under aegis of Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • This year’s partner country is South Korea and focus country is Belarus.
  • Besides, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand are partner states and Haryana is focus state.
  • This year’s theme highlights country’s persistent efforts to alleviate poverty through meaningful convergence of digital technologies and e-governance


Federal Bank to open its first overseas branch in Dubai

  • Federal Bank, India’s major commercial bank in the private sector has received Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s permission to open its first international branch at the Dubai International Financial Centre.
  • Federal Bank has its Representative Office at Abu Dhabi that serves as a nerve centre for NRI customers in the UAE.
  • The Bank also has an IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Swiss major Molinari Rail to set up manufacturing unit in India

  • Molinari Rail will set up a manufacturing and assembly centre for auxiliary power units for diesel locomotives in India by next year.
  • Molinari Rail AG has entered into a strategic pact to design, manufacture and deliver the auxiliary power units (APUs) for 1,000 diesel locomotives to be built in India for Indian Railways.


  • Researchers isolate a bacterium in chicken transmitting multidrug resistant pathogen to humans
    Researchers from Hyderabad have isolated Helicobacter pullorum bacterium in chicken that may be source of transmission of the multidrug resistance pathogen to humans.
  • Helicobacter pullorum is a pathogen commonly found in the liver and gut of poultry birds including chickens.
  • Infected chicken with Helicobacter pullorum bacterium when consumed are known to cause gastrointestinal infections in humans.
  • It is known to produce a cancer causing agent called cytolethal distending toxin.


World Diabetes Day: 14 November

  • The theme for this year is “Eyes on Diabetes“.
  • World Diabetes Day is an annual campaign, led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations.

Fortune magazine named Mark Zuckerberg Business Person of the Year

  • Fortune magazine has named the co-founder and CEO of the biggest social networking site Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg as Business Person of the Year, 2016.
  • The 32-year-old Zuckerberg, was honored based on various criteria, including the company’s performance year over year as well as his vision for growth and the ability to achieve it.
  • Mark Zuckerberg was followed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who is recognized for dominating e-commerce and for breaking new ground by developing products such as the Amazon Echo.
  • While Mary Dillon- founder of the Ulta beauty cosmetics store stands on 3rd place.

Indian-origin humanitarian gets Global Citizen Award

  • An Indian-origin man from South Africa was awarded the Global Citizen Award for his “innovative and visionary” contribution to the global community.
  • Imtiaz Sooliman founded the internationally-lauded Gift of the Givers Foundation, which is Africa’s largest disaster relief organisation.
  • The award consists a specially-made commemorative medal, an award certificate signed by the president of the independent Award Committee and a USD 50,000 monetary prize, of which USD 25,000 is donated to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Aditi Ashok makes history by winning the Women’s Indian Open
