SEBI cuts broker fees by 25 pc to Rs 15 per transaction: likely to decrease overall cost

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India, SEBI, has decided to lower broker fees by 25 per cent to 15 rupees per transaction of one crore rupees as part of calibration of various other fees collected by the regulator from different market intermediaries.
  • Moreover,it also decided to give an option to all market intermediaries and companies to make their regulatory payments in digital mode. The move would help in reducing failures due to payment gateway issues.

Market regulator tightens merger norms

  • In a bid to safeguard the interests of the public shareholders, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has tightened the norms for merger of an unlisted company with a listed entity.
  • The board of the capital market regulator, which met at Jaipur, decided that the holding of public shareholders post the merger cannot be less than 25{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769}.
  • Further, the watchdog has stipulated a similar threshold for institutional shareholders of the unlisted entity as well, post-merger.
  • The objective is to have wider public shareholding and to prevent very large unlisted company to get listed by merging with a very small company.The regulator has also decided that an unlisted company can be merged with a listed company only if the latter is listed on a stock exchange having nationwide trading terminals.

India’s rising income inequality,says Oxfam

  • India’s richest 1{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} now hold a huge 58{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of the country’s total wealth — higher than the global figure of about 50{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769}.
  • In the report titled ‘An economy for the 99 per cent’, Oxfam said it is time to build a human economy that benefits everyone, not just the privileged few.
  • Just 57 billionaires in India now have same wealth ($ 216 billion) as that of the bottom 70{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} population of the country.
  • Referring to the Global Wage Report 2016-17 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the study said India suffers from huge gender pay gap and has among the worst levels of gender wage disparity — men earning more than women in similar jobs — with the gap exceeding 30{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769}.

Digital Dakiya scheme inaugurated in MP to encourage cashless transactions

  • In Madhya Pradesh Indore district witnessed inauguration of first of its kind scheme of the country. Digital Dakiya, which aims at encouraging cashless transactions. “Digital Dakiya or Digital Postman will visit different places to teach and encourage people about cashless transactions and its benefits.

Saksham – 2017:

  • Saksham – 2017 (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav) is aimed to create awareness amongst masses towards judicious utilization and conservation of petroleum productsalong with use of energy efficient appliances and switching to cleaner fuels.
  • The programme is being organized byPCRA (Petroleum Conservation Research Association) and other Oil & Gas PSUs under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.
  • It is a month long awareness programme during which workshops will be held for drivers of commercial vehicles and housewives, cooks on adopting simple fuel saving measures.

15th January: 69th Army Day being observed

  • Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India for recognition of Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from on this day in 1949.
  • The day is celebrated to pay homage and salute to the courageous and brave Indian soldiers who have been sacrificing their lives for protecting the country.

  • An Indian film actor turned politician Shatrughan Sinha has bagged the 62nd Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award -2016 , presented at the NSCI Dome, Mumbai (Maharastra).
  • Aamir Khan’s Dangal swept away three of the four major awards, namely Best Film, Best Actor and Best Director.
  • The year’s award ceremony was co-hosted by Shahrukh Khan, Karan Johar, and Kapil Sharma.

  • Rajeev Singh, Member (Finance) in Prasar Bharati Board, will take charge as interim CEO of the public broadcaster after S C Panda retires in February.

 Sports minister inaugurates Khelo India competitions

  • The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel has inaugurated national level competitions under the “Khelo India” scheme at the S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Pool complex in the Talkatora Stadium inNew Delhi.
  • Khelo India will provide a platform to the budding talents to compete at national level and will groom them to achieve excellence at international level.
  • The competitions are being conducted not only to promote sports at grass-root level but also help create sports infrastructure in the country.
  • A National portal for Sports Talent Search will also be launched in this month by  Sports Ministry.

Gujarat wins First Ranji Trophy title beating Mumbai by five wickets

  • Gujarat won their first ever Ranji Trophy title beating Mumbai by five wickets in the final at the Holkar stadium in Indore. Parthiv Patel’s 143 and Munprit Juneja’s 54 runs helped Gujrat to chase down the highest successful chase in the final at the historic Holkar stadium.
