Emmanuel Macron names Edouard Philippe as French Prime Minister

  • France’s newly-elected President Emmanuel Macron has named Edouard Philippe as Prime Minister of France.
  • The 46-year-old lawmaker and mayor of Le Havre is from the conservative Les Republicans party.


West Bengal makes Bengali Mandatory in all

  • West Bengal State government has made Bengali mandatory in all schools, including private English medium schools.
  • Henceforth, it would be compulsory for all schools including English medium schools affiliated to boards other than West Bengal Board of Secondary
  • Education to teach Bengali as an optional subject from Class I so that students can study it either as a second or third language.
  • At present, teaching of Bengali is not mandatory in the schools. Apart from Bengali, English and Hindi, students can opt for other languages such as Urdu, Gurumukhi, Nepali and Ol-chiki as the medium of instruction in schools of the State.


World Bank’s electricity accessibility ranking for the year 2016 has been released.

  • The ranking was based on ten parameters, including the ease of getting electricity. Some other parameters were: number of procedures involved, time taken to obtain a new connection, cost for obtaining a commercial connection (up to 140KVA), and reliability of power supply.
  • India moved up to the 26th spot. India was at the 99th position in 2014; it jumped 73 ranks in 2016.
  • The Centre has taken several initiatives that have improved India’s ranking for 2016. The government’s rural electrification program has mainly contributed to the improvement.


  • Amendment of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) regulations for installing transformers (up to 500KVA) on double-pole structures; waiving off electrical inspector approval for 11kV installations by Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) and allowing self-certification by DISCOM engineers; changing tariff regulations, rationalizing LT (low tension) tariff, and changing supply codes.

Administrative measures are:

  • Providing online portals enabling customers to apply for connections without the need for physical documents,
  • Reducing the procedures for the release of a new connection to only three: online application and site inspection, demand note generation (if required), and external connection and meter installation,
  • Providing connections (up to 150KVA) within 7/15 days if there is a necessity.

India’s GDP projected to grow 7.4{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} in 2017-18: FICCI survey

  • In a survey conducted during March and April 2017, FICCI predicted India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth will be around 7.4{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} for fiscal 2017-18, with a minimum and maximum level of 7{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} and 7.6{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} respectively.
  • Agricultural sector is estimated to clock 3.5{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} growth in 2017-18, the pick-up in overall GDP growth will also be supported by an improvement in industry and services sector growth. The industry and services sector are expected to grow by 6.9{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} and 8.4{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} respectively in 2017-18.

Sensex and Nifty at new Record Highs

  • The 30-share BSE Sensex has reached an all-time intra-day high of 30,567 breaching its previous intra-day high of 30,366.43 touched on May 11.
  • The technology, power, FMCG, IT, consumer durables and healthcare that leads the BSE sectoral indices had made gains up to 0.66 {be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769}.
  • The National Stock Exchange index Nifty did not disappoint either by gaining 0.39{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} to reach a new high of 9,507.40 surpassing its previous intra-day high of 9,450.65 reached  on May 11.
  • The good performance of the indices were due to upbeat sentiments backed by robust foreign fund inflows and encouraging earnings by some blue-chip companies, besides the overnight gains in Europe and the US markets.


PM Modi launches river conservation project in Madhya Pradesh

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Narmada Seva Mission for the conservation of the crucial river, which is a lifeline of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Narmada river captured the attention of the nation when it became the center of a decades-long struggle to stop the raising of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
  • Narmada Seva Yatra was launched on December 11, 2016, projecting it as the world’s “biggest river conservation campaign with public participation.” It was concluded on 15th May 2017.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates 2nd meeting of NPDRR in New Delhi

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the second meeting of National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) in New Delhi.
  • The Second meeting of NPDRR will be held over two days, i.e. 15-16 May 2017 on the theme ‘Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development: Making India resilient by 2030’.

  • Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling was conferred with the first Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Lifetime Achievement Honour in Public Service by President Pranab Mukherjee.


Nepalese woman breaks world record for most Everest summits

  • A 44-year-old Nepalese mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa has broken her own world record for the most Everest summits by a woman after scaling the world’s tallest peak for the eighth time.
  • She bettered her own record of scaling Mt Everest seven times.

  • Former Puducherry Chief Minister S Ramassamy died after a brief illness, family sources said. He was 80


Women’s Cricket: India’s Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut Sets new Record

  • The partnership of Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut scored 320 in 45.3 overs in 45.3 overs to become the world’s first pair, either male or female, to forge a 300-run opening-wicket partnership in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).
  • The earlier best partnership for the first wicket in men’s cricket was 286 scored by Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya against England in 2006, and the best partnership for the first wicket for women’s cricket was 268 scored by Sarah Taylor and Caroline Atkins against South Africa in 2008.
