Russia withdraws from International Criminal Court

  • President Vladimir Putin has signed an executive order removing Russia’s signature from the International Criminal Court’s founding treaty  on 16th November.
  • Russia in 2000 signed the Rome treaty that established the Hague-based court but never ratified it.
  • Russia’s foreign ministry said the court was not truly independent, describing it as one-sided.
  • The move came days after Gambia said that it was leaving the court, following South Africa and Burundi.
  • President Duterte of the Philippines has threatened to follow suit, saying last night that smaller countries are unfairly treated by the “useless” court.


Apex court refuses to lift ban on jallikattu banned in 2014

  • The apex court questioned the need to “tame” a domestic animal like the bull and further held that Jallikattu has nothing to do with exercise of the fundamental right of religious freedom.
  • It also held that Jallikattu runs counter to the concept of welfare of the animal, which is the basic foundation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
  • Tamil Nadu has been arguing that Jallikattu – the mostly southern bull-racing sport – should be permitted as it showcases a cultural tradition that has been part of the custom and culture of people of the state for 5,000 years.

  • Jallikattu is a bull taming sport played in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations on Mattu Pongal day.
  • It is a Tamil tradition called ‘Yeru thazhuvatha’in Sangam literature(meaning, to embrace bulls), popular amongst warriors during the Tamil classical period.
  • The majority of jallikattu bulls belong to the pulikulam breed of cattle.

SC orders to constitute nodal agency to crack down sex selection ads

  • The Supreme Court ordered search engines Google, Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing to immediately stop displaying advertisements relating to pre-natal sex determination tests.
  • It also directed the Union government to constitute a nodal agency to monitor and trigger search engines to crack down on online pre-natal sex determination advertisements.


Chhattisgarh: First state to adopt resolution on demonetisation

  • Chhattisgarh has become the first state to adopt a resolution welcoming the demonetization of high-value currency notes.

Reliance Group launches IoT services under venture UNLIMIT

  • Reliance Group has partnered with Cisco Jasper for the launch of a venture called UNLIMIT, which will provide Internet of Things (IoT) services to its enterprise customers in India.

About IoT

  • IoT is a network of “things” that include identifiable devices, appliances, equipment, the machinery of all forms and sizes with the intelligence to seamlessly connect, communicate and control or manage each other to perform a set of tasks with minimum intervention.

Setting up of Industry Driven SRTMI

  • Ministry of Steel is planning to set up an Industry driven institutional mechanism namely Steel Research & Technology Mission of India (SRTMI), to facilitate joint collaborative research projects in the iron & steel sector in India.

About The steel industry

  • Indian Steel Sector’s contribution to overall Gross Domestic Product of the country is nearly 2{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} during 2015-16.
  • The total exposure of steel industry is about Rs. 3.13 lakh crore out of which Gross Non Performing Assets is about Rs. 1.15 lakh crore.
  • This works out to 36.94{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of total loan outstanding as on March, 2016.


President launches National Student Startup Policy

  • President Pranab Mukherjee launched the National Student Startup Policy (NSSP) to promote technology-driven student start-ups during the second Visitor’s Conference held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

About the Start up policy

  • The National Student Startup Policy, formulated by AICTE, aims to create 100,000 technology based student start-ups and a million employment opportunities within the next 10 years.
  • The policy plans on achieving this by developing an ideal entrepreneurial ecosystem and promoting strong inter-institutional partnerships among technical institutions.
  • It emphasizes the much-desired need for an appropriate startup policy to propel the youth of India through and beyond the 21st century.


China’s Sunway Taihulight wins fastest supercomputer title

  • China’s ‘Sunway Taihulight’ has won the fastest supercomputer title in the recently released 48th edition of Top 500 list of supercomputers.
  • Chinese supercomputer has retained the top spot in the list of the world’s fastest supercomputers for the eighth consecutive year


World Philosophy Day: 17 November

  • The World Philosophy Day is observed globally on the third Thursday of November every year.
  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organised the special events this year.
  • The World Philosophy Day was introduced in 2002 by UNESCO to encourage the world to share their philosophical heritage and open their minds to new ideas.

Former J&K Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha passes away at 92

  • Lt Gen Sinha had joined the army in 1943 and has also served as India’s Ambassador to Nepal and as the Governor of Assam.
