 US, Japan Vow To Boost Defence Cooperation With India, S Korea, Australia

  • The US and Japanhave agreed to advance their multilateral security and defence cooperation with countries like India, South Korea and Australia, amidst China’s growing assertiveness in the Asia Pacific region.
  • During the meeting the ministers underscored the importance of cooperating to promote a rules-based international order, taking note of the United States continued commitment to maintain a strong presence in the region and Japans initiatives demonstrated by its “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy”.

China Launches First Cyber Court in e-commerce Hub

China launched its first cyber court specializing in handling Internet-related cases in the e-commerce hub of Hangzhou.
The Hangzhou Internet Court in Hangzhou will handle cases such as online trade disputes and copyright lawsuits. Hangzhou is home to many Internet companies, including e-commerce giant Alibaba.

China launches 1st digital court for internet disputes

  • China launched its first digital cyber-court to settle internet related disputes.

A lawsuit can be filed in five minutes, saving time and reducing costs.

India, US to establish new ministerial dialogue

India and US have resolved to enhance peace across the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new 2-by-2 ministerial dialogue that will elevate their strategic consultation.

Facts Related to New Ministerial dialogue

  • The India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, once described by the US State Department as the “signature mechanism for advancing the United States’ and India’s shared priorities,” will now be replaced by the new dialogue in which the foreign and defence ministers will participate.
  • Composition:The new dialogue format will involve the Indian foreign minister and the US secretary of state as well as the Indian defence minister and the US defence secretary.
  • The shared priorities include job creation, improving the business and investment climate and sustaining a rules-based global order.
  • The US has strategic consultations in this format with key partners and allies including Australia, Japan and the Philippines. India has had a dialogue in the two-plus-two format with Japan with secretaries or senior-most bureaucrats from the foreign and defence ministries engaging each other.
  • History: Till last year, trade and commercial issues were discussed in the Strategic and Commercial Dialogue and the Trade Policy Forum. The first Strategic and Commercial Dialogue was held in 2015 in Washington and the second in New Delhi last year. It was seen as an elevation of the US-India Strategic Dialogue in place since 2009 and which focused on regional security, economic cooperation, defence, trade and climate challenges.

N Korea says the threat is only to U.S.

  • North Korea has claimed that its nuclear weapons will pose a threat to only the US and not the rest of the world.
  • The country won’t initiate a nuclear attack against any nation in the world unless it participates in anti-North Korea military actions.

Neymar Becomes Goodwill Ambassador for Disabled

  1. World’s Most expensive player Neymarbecame the Goodwill Ambassador for Handicap International.
  2. The charity was founded in 1982 to assist 6,000 Cambodian refugees who had lost limbs and later co-founded the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) in 1992 which won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Union Bank Signs Insurance Deals

  • Union Bank of Indiaentered into a corporate agency agreement with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Cholamandalam MS General Insurance for distribution of their insurance products.

Solar eclipse could cost US employers over Rs.4,400 crore

  • The solar eclipse occurring on August 21st in the middle of the workday may cost US employers in lost productivity.
  • Employees will need about 20 mins to find a viewing spot and watch the eclipse.

SBI collected Rs.235 crore as fine

  • SBI has realised the penalty from 3.68 crore accounts for not maintaining monthly average balance in the first quarter.
  • An RTI official has appealed to SBI to review its policy in the interest of poor account holders.


NASA successfully places next generation tracking and data relay satellite TDRS-M into orbit

NASA’s third and final in a series of next generation communications satellites has successfully been placed into orbit. The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-M (TDRS-M) was launched aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket.


The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, or TDRSS, is a fleet of geosynchronous communications satellites that form part of NASA’s Space Network. Introduced in the 1980s to support the Space Shuttle, TDRSS continues in service today, providing a relay for communications, scientific data, telemetry and commands between operators on the ground and spacecraft in Earth orbit.

Key facts:

  • When ready, TDRS-M will become part of NASA’s Space Network providing navigation and high-data-rate communications to the International Space Station, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, rockets and a host of other spacecraft.
  • The TDRS fleet is a critical connection delivering science and human spaceflight data to those who can use it here on Earth.
  • TDRS-M will expand the capabilities and extend the lifespan of the Space Network, allowing researchers to continue receiving and transmitting mission data well into the next decade.


TRIFED celebrates World Honey Bee Day

  • To create awareness about Beekeeping and uses of its products including Honey, Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) is celebrating World Honey Bee Day (WHBD) on August 19 across the Country.
  • The main themeof celebrating WHBD is to save Indian honey bee.
  • Benefits of beekeeping:Beekeeping has been useful in pollination of crops, thereby, increasing income of the farmers/beekeepers by way of increasing crop yield and providing honey and other beehive products, viz. royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis, bees wax, etc. that serves a source of livelihood for rural poor. Therefore, honeybees/ beekeeping has been recognised as one of the important inputs for sustainable development of agriculture/ horticulture.
  • Significance of honey and honey bees for tribal people: Honey is an important Minor Forest Produce. About 90{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of the Scheduled Tribes of the country live in and around forest areas and the forests provide 60{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of the food & medicinal needs of tribals and 40{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of their income from Minor Forest Produce (MFP) mostly of which come from Honey.

World Humanitarian Day: 19 August

  • World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 Augustto pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.
  • The campaign was launched on WHD with the theme- #NotATarget. The Day is organized by the United Nations.


Sri Lanka Appoints First Tamil Navy Chief After Four Decades

  • Rear Admiral Travis Sinniahwas appointed as the chief of Sri Lanka’s naval forces, making him the first from the minority Tamil community to head the Navy since the brutal civil war erupted in the country 45 years ago.
  • He was appointed as the Navy chief by President Maithripala Sirisena.Sinniah succeeds Vice Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne who has retired.


  • He is the second Tamil to head the Lankan Navy after Rajan Kadirgamar, who was the commander in the late 1960s.


Putin Appoints Nikolay Kudashev as Russia’s New Ambassador to India

  • Russian President Vladimir Putinappointed career diplomat Nikolay Kudashev as Russia’s new ambassador to India.
  • The appointment of Kudashev comes nearly seven months after the death of Russia’s previous ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin.

Sanjiv Gupta Appointed President and MD of General Motors India

  • General Motors Indiaannounced the appointment of Sanjiv Gupta as the new President and Managing Director of the company.
  • He will replace Kaher Kazem. Kazem has been appointed as the President and CEO of GM Korea.

Mamta Suri Takes Charge as Executive Director of IBBI

  • Mamta Suritook charge as Executive Director of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) in New Delhi.
  • Before joining IBBI, Dr. Suri was serving as Chief General Manager, Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI). She has also received Honorary membership for High Scholastic Achievement from USA.


  • IBBI was set up on 1st October 2016 under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (Code).


Veteran Photographer S Paul Dies 

  • Veteran photographer S Pauldied at a hospital in New Delhi. He was 88. He was a self-taught photographer. He was the first Indian to win the Nikon International Photo Contest in 1971.
  • Apart from other recognitions, Paul was the first Indian to be profiled by The British Journal of Photography in 1967.
