PM inaugurates Chhattisgarh foundation day celebrations; Unveils Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya’s statue

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Chhattisgarh’s 16th foundation day celebrations in Naya Raipur.
  • Chhattisgarh Governor B D Tandon and Chief Minister Raman Singh are also present at the site. Mr Modi unveiled the statue of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in Naya Raipur.
  • He also dedicate to people, ‘Ekatma Path‘ and the Bus Rapid Transport System in the city.

About Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya

  • Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (25 September 1916 – 11 February 1968) was an Indian philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and political scientist.
  • He was one of the most important leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the present day Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • Born 25 September 1916   -Nagla Chandrabhan, Mathura, British India (now Uttar Pradesh, India)
  • Died 11 February 1968      – Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, India

Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly quits

  • Rishi Jaitly, Twitter’s India head who helped popularise the adoption of the micro-blogging website among government departments to respond to citizen queries, has quit the company.
  • Jaitly was the vice-president for Asia Pacific, which includes India, West Asia and North Africa for Twitter. He made the announcement on a twitter storm 01st November 2016.

Kerala becomes open defecation free state

  • Kerala has become the third Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in the country.
  • The announcement was made on the state’s foundation day on 01st November, 2016.
  • Earlier, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim had declared themselves Open Defecation Free.
  • Freedom from open defecation has been proven to lead to significant health benefits in terms of incidences of water-borne diseases, especially in children, and provide safety and dignity for all, especially women and senior citizens.

NHPC commissions 50 MW wind power project in Rajasthan

  • State-run NHPC has announced commissioning of a 50 MW wind power project in Rajasthan. NHPC has commissioned its 50 MW wind power project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
  • The project consist of 25 nos wind turbine generators each of 2 MW capacity, which has been successfully synchronised with grid in October 2016.

Banks to report frauds of Rs 1 crore and above to CVC

  • With several high-ticket alleged frauds like Vijay Mallya loan default case coming to fore, Central Vigilance Commission has now made it mandatory for the public sector banks to report to it all such matters involving funds over Rs one crore.
  • The Commission will also call regular monthly meetings of senior officials of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), CBI and banks to monitor probe in suspected bank frauds of Rs 50 crore and above.

Finance Ministry releases Rs 1,093 crore for restoration of infrastructure in J&K

  • The finance ministry released first installment of special assistance of Rs 1,093.34 crore for repair and permanent restoration of damaged public buildings in Jammu and Kashmir in pursuance of the announcement made by the Prime Minister last November.
  • A total sum of Rs 2,000 crorehas been provided for permanent restoration of damaged Infrastructure such as schools, colleges, hospitals, bus stations and other critical public infrastructure under Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan for J&K.
  • The Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan for J&Kwas announced by Narendra Modi on November 7, 2015, for Rs 80,068 crore for post flood relief and restoration and long-term development of the state, including assistance for small trade and business, power, new and renewable energy.

India and Palestine inks MoU to setup Palestine-Indo techno park in Ramallah

  • India and Palestine on 31st October 2016 signed a MoU for setting up a Palestine-India Techno Park in Ramallah, Palestine.
  • The Palestinian side has made the land available for the project.President of India, during his 2015 visit to Palestine announced five projects with regards to solidarity with Palestinian crisis. These projects includes a Techno Park in Ramallah ($12 million), Palestine Institute of Diplomacy ($4.5 million), and India-Palestine Centre of Excellence in ICT in Gaza ($1 million).
  • During the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to Palestine in October last year, the announcement for setting up of park was made.India has announced a grant of $12 million for setting up the park with payment of $3 million each on half-yearly basis for two years.

India ranks 133rd in 2016 Global Youth Development Index

  • India has been ranked 133rd out of 183 countries in the 2016 Global Youth Development Index (YDI) compiled by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
  • The Global Youth Development Index report measures countries’ prospects for young people in employment, education, health, civic and political spheres.

Top 10 countries in 2016 YDI:

  • Germany (1), Denmark (2), Australia (3), Switzerland (4), UK (5), Netherlands (6), Austria (7), Luxembourg (8), Portugal (9) and Japan (10)
  • India’s neighbours: Sri Lanka (31), Bhutan (69) and Nepal (77). India related facts: India accounts for nearly 20{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of the global youth population, with nearly 345 million young people between the ages of 15 and 30 living in the country.
  • India is currently experiencing the most significant “youth bulge” – with nearly 27{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of its total population made up of young people. India’s overall rank in 2016 YDU is relatively low, but it has registered an 11{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} improvement in scores over last five years (from 2010 and 2015).
  • The report highlights need for greater investment to reap so-called demographic dividend. Youth development levels in India lag particularly in the domains of education, health and employment.

Odisha Government launches Madhubabu Aain Sahayata Sibir Scheme to provide legal assistance to the society at the grassroots level.

  • The scheme has been named after great Odia lawyer Madhu Babu, who is considered as the first lawyer of Odisha.

About the scheme

  • State government will provide free legal consultations to deprived sections of the society by setting up legal assistance cells in all 6,812 gram panchayats across the state.
  • Legal assistance will be given in shape of free legal aid in order to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen for economic and other reasons.
  • A practicing lawyer with minimum three years of experience would head the legal cells.
  • The lawyer who will give legal assistance will receive Rs 500 per sitting as remuneration.
  • It will help people especially the women, senior citizens, children, SC, ST and socially and educationally backward to resolve long pending litigations.
  • Legal aid is the provision of assistance to people otherwise unable to afford legal representation and access to the court system. Legal aid is regarded as central in providing access to justice by ensuring equality before the law, the right to counsel and the right to a fair trial.


  • Article 39A of the Constitution of India, provides for equal justice and free legal aid:
  • The State shall secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice, on a basis of equal opportunity, and shall, in particular, provide free legal aid, by suitable legislation or schemes or in any other way, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.
