Workshop on MSME Cooperation amongst Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Member Countries

  • This Workshop will facilitate exchange of ideas, concerns and experiences of IORA member states and would help evolve a common MoU to address the emerging challenges in the region in MSME sector.

The objectives of IORA are as follows:

  1. To promote sustainable growth and balanced development of the region and member states
  2. To focus on those areas of economic cooperation which provide maximum opportunities for development, shared interest and mutual benefits
  3. To promote liberalisation, remove impediments and lower barriers towards a freer and enhanced flow of goods, services, investment, and technology within the Indian Ocean rim.


Centre sets up a negotiation panel on river Mahanadi and its tributaries

  • Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has constituted a negotiations committee to assess availability and utilisation of waters of Mahanadi and its tributaries.
  • The committee will be chaired by Member (WP&P), Central Water Commission and will have 11 other members comprising representatives from the States of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Union Ministries of Agriculture, Environment Forest and Climate Change, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, India Meteorological Department and Central Water Commission.

  • According to the United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2017 report, India’s economy is projected to grow by 7.7{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} in fiscal 2017 and 7.6{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} in 2018.


Govt inks MoU with National Yuva Cooperative Society  to set up 1,000 Janaushadhi Kendras

  • The government has signed an agreement with the National Yuva Cooperative Society to set up 1,000 Janaushadhi Kendras across the country and targets to open such medical stores in every block and gram panchayat to provide quality medicines at an affordable price.


10th Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) Begins in Jaipur

  • The 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) was inaugurated  Jaipur Literature Festival at the historic Diggi Palace, Jaipur, Rajasthan jointly by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, veteran lyricist Gulzar, American poet Anne Waldman and spiritual writer Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
  • The theme of the 10th edition of JLF is The Freedom to Dream India at 70.


CEPI formally launched at WEF, Davos

  • The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) was officially launched at World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos after it received $460-million to develop vaccines against 3 emerging highly-contagious and fatal diseases.
  • These three diseases are Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-coronavirus, Lassa fever, and Nipah virus.
  • In 5 years, it aims develop at least two vaccines for each virus through early human studies so that they are ready for a real-world test as soon as one of these viruses surfaces again.

Physicists create a new form of Hydrogen

  • Physicists from Austria have created new form of Hydrogen i.e. negatively charged hydrogen clusters. It is a previously unseen form of hydrogen.
  • It will help researchers to easily identify the clusters in nature.


Delhi Police commissioner Alok Verma appointed next CBI chief

  • A 3-member committee headed by PM Modi selected Alok Kumar Verma as next CBI chief for a period of 2 years.
  • He will take over from interim director Rakesh Asthana, who was handed the reins of the premier investigating agency after former director Anil Sinha retired on December 2, 2016.


Alibaba Becomes Worldwide Sponsor of Olympic Games through 2028

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group entered into a long-term partnership through 2028  at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
  • This makes Alibaba the worldwide sponsor of Olympic Games through 2028.
