IAEA Opens Atomic Fuel Reserve in Kazakhstan

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decided to open the Low Enriched Uranium Bank in Kazakhstan. The IAEA opened the bank to ensure the supply of nuclear fuel in the event of disruption due to political or market problems.
  • The reserve opened will store 90 tons of Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU), the essential ingredient needed to make the fuel for light-water nuclear reactors, which generate electricity.


IIM-A opens matrimonial website for people with HIV.

  • A team of researchers at Indian Institute Management-Ahmadabad has developed a matrimonial website for HIV positive people to find them a partner and facilitate social integration.
  • It was created as a project for the NGO, Gujarat State Network of People living with HIV/AIDS.

Narendra Modi inaugurated Rs15,000-crore worth road projects in Rajasthan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated highway and road projects worth Rs15,000 crore for the state in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
  • He has also inaugurated Chambal bridge in Kota. Modi inaugurated 12 national highways projects worth Rs5,610 crore and laid foundation stones for 11 projects worth Rs9,490 crore.


ICEX Launches World’s First Diamond Futures Contracts

  • The Indian Commodity Exchange (ICEX) launched the world’s first diamond futures contracts to provide exporters with a hedging tool. India is a global diamond polishing hub where 14 out of every 15 rough diamonds in the world are polished.
  • At the launch, the first diamond contract for delivery in November was traded at Rs 3,279/cent. With over 103 registered members so far, ICEX has launched 1 ct diamond futures contract for delivery in November.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) surges ahead with 62 lakh enrolment

  • The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) through its ‘One Nation One Pension’ Mobilization Campaign has sourced approximately 3.07 lakh APY accounts which led to a total of 62 lakh enrolments under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) as on date. This campaign was organized all over the country by PFRDA from 2nd August to 19th August 2017 in association with the APY Service Provider Banks.
  • The objective of PFRDA is to cover the maximum possible population uncovered by any pension scheme under the APY scheme so that India as a nation can move from a pension less to a pensioned society and the citizens can live a life of dignity in their vulnerable years.

Canara HSBC Oriental Life Launched ‘PoS’ product

  • Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance Company (CHOICE) has come up with a ‘Point-of-Sale’ product targeted at the mass-market segment. The product- ‘PoS – Easy Bima Plan’ is the first PoS product for the company and is a pure term insurance plan.
  • While this product has initially been launched through a regional rural bank of Canara Bank, it would be available in the bank branches of Canara Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) in the next two months.

YouTube Changes its Logo for the First Time

  • Google-owned YouTube has refreshed its iconic logo and introduced some major design changes to its desktop and mobile apps.
  • Unlike minor tweaks, this is the biggest change the YouTube logo has received over the years. The logo ditches the red color inside the “Tube” part of the name and places the now familiar play icon to the left side of the YouTube name.


Shri Rajnath Singh Inaugurates “YUVA – A Skill Development Program”

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the YUVA – a skill development program. It is an initiative by Delhi Police under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.
  • Delhi Police has tied up with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for providing mass job linked skill training for the selected youth.

  • National Skill Development Corporation shall be providing skill training to the youth under ‘Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna’ (PMKVY) and CII will provide job linked training through its Sector Skill Councils who are connected to industry and thereby provide job guarantee.


Government approves major defense reforms: Arun Jaitley

  • In major reform of the Indian armed forces to improve the combat efficiency, the Unions Cabinet approved a series of recommendations that would redeploy 57,000 soldiers in non-core areas to operational duties.
  • Arun Jaitley said that 65 out of 99 recommendations of the Shetkar Committee has been accepted by the government .


PM Modi to Attend 9th BRICS Summit in China

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 9th BRICS Summit, Xiamen in China’s Fujian province during 3rd to 5th of September. Subsequently, the Prime Minister will pay a State visit to Myanmar from September 5th to 7th.
  • This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first bilateral State visit to Myanmar.


Hurricane Harvey could cost $100bn.

  • Hurricane Harvey, the most powerful storm to hit US’ Texas in more than 50 years could cost for USD 100bn, an insurance analyst has claimed.
  • The Hurricane Harvey storm has so far claimed at least 17 lives and authorities estimate 30,000 people will need shelter.

IIT team makes ‘implantable pancreas’

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have successfully created an implantable bioartificial pancreas model grown within a 3D silk scaffold. The pancreas encapsulates insulin-producing cells and is capable of naturally producing insulin in a sustained manner.
  • Scientists coated the scaffold containing beta cells with a semi-permeable membrane barrier. The membrane allows insulin produced to be released into the blood stream but does not allow the immune cells to cross the membrane and kill the islet cells.
  • To ensure that the implant is not rejected by the body’s immune system, drugs that suppress the immune system were embedded in the scaffold.
  • Studies carried in the lab showed that the beta cells in the scaffold were able to produce adequate amount of insulin in response to different glucose levels within a few seconds.

  • NITI Aayog, in partnership with MyGov and the United Nations, announced the winners of the Women Transforming India Awards, 2017. Launched on International Women’s Day on 8 March, the contest aimed to gather lesser-own stories of women leading change.
  • Honourable Minister for Textiles and Information and Broadcasting, Smriti Irani has awarded top 12 winners, honoring their courage and role in transforming societies.

BSE Board Approved Another 5-year Term for Ashish Chauhan as CEO

  • Top stock exchange BSE’s board has approved another five-year term for its chief Ashish Chauhan. Chauhan has joined BSE as deputy chief executive officer (CEO) in 2009. He was made MD and CEO for a period of five years with effect from November 2, 2012.
  • Chauhan will be BSE’s Managing Director and CEO until November 1, 2022.

Indian Hotels Company Appoints Puneet Chhatwal as MD and CEO

  • Tata group hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has appointed Duetsche Hospitality chief executive Puneet Chhatwal as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
