Pentagon successfully tests ICBM defense system for first time

  • United States has for the first time successfully tested its defence system against an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).
  • A ground-based interceptor was launched at a California air base and shot down a mock ballistic missile. As per the Pentagon, the test comes after Pyongyang fired its ninth missile this year.
  • It was the first live-fire test against a simulated ICBM for the Ground-Based Missile Defense.

India and Spain Sign Seven Agreements

  • India and Spain have signed seven agreements following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy at the Moncloa Palace in the Spanish capital.
  • The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Spain in nearly 30 years.
  • The last Prime Minister to visit Spain was Rajiv Gandhi in 1988. Earlier, PM Modi and the Spanish prime minister had met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Turkey in November 2015.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed Spain’s infrastructure, tourism, energy and defense companies to invest in priority sectors in India.
  • Spain is India’s 7th largest trading partner in the European Union. Bilateral trade between both the nations have totalled USD 5.27 billion in 2016.

India ranks 120th among 131 nations in women workforce: World Bank report

  • According to India Development Report released by World Bank,  India had one of the lowest female participation in the workforce, ranking 120th among 131 countries.
  • As per the report, the participation level has been dropping since 2005, despite having 42{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} women who are graduates. Jobs for Indian women remain primarily in the agriculture sector.

India Mobile Congress (IMC 2017) to be held in September May

  • India Mobile Congress 2017 (IMC 2017) is scheduled to be held as a three day event from 27th to 29th September 2017 in New Delhi.
  • This was announced by the Union Minister for Communications Manoj Sinha.
  • The Indian telecom market is the second-largest in the world after China. India has a total subscriber base of over 1.18 billion subscribers.

India to have its own GPS system from 2018

  • Coming next year, you won’t have to rely on heavily accented lady for directions on Google Maps. Instead India will be having its own GPS system. ‘NavIC’ will be operational early 2018.
  • NavIC or ‘Navigation with Indian Constellation’ the name given by PM Narendra Modi after the launch of Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System IRNSS-1G, is designed to provide accurate position information to users within the country.

‘BlessU-2’

  • It is a robot priest that beams lights from its hands and grants automated ‘blessings’ to people. It was recently launched in Germany.

World No Tobacco Day: 31 May

  • World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is “Tobacco – a threat to development.”
  • This theme has been set by the World Health Organization, WHO. The campaign aims to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to sustainable development, including the health and economic well-being of citizens in all countries.

India’s Health Minister JP Nadda gets WHO’s special recognition for tobacco control

  • World No-Tobacco-Day is observed on 31st May globally. On this day people are encouraged to observe abstinence of 24 hours from all forms of tobacco consumption.
  • This year Union Health Minister of India Jagat Prakash Nadda is chosen for WHO Director-General Special Recognition Awards for accelerating India’s tobacco control initiatives and taking bold measures to protect people against hazards of tobacco use.

Harmanpreet Kaur become the first Indian woman to play in Kia Super League

  • Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India’s T20 team has become the first Indian Women cricketer to play in Kia Super League, the England T20 League.
