Government finds scientific way to implement social welfare programmes, combat poverty

  • The government is embracing a more scientific way to implement social welfare programmes in a move to better combat poverty by weeding out underserving beneficiaries.
  • The government is planning to adopt the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) instead of the poverty line-based method to identify recipients for its pro-poor schemes.

  • Released by Ministry Of  Rural Development on the standard of living of rural households in India.
  • The numbers come from the SECC which was conducted in 2011 and is meant to provide data on various socio-economic indicators, and most importantly, on caste.
  • Fewer than five per cent of rural households pay income tax. Even among rich states, like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, this number hovers around the five per cent mark.
  • In just eight per cent of households does the main earning member make more than Rs 10,000 per month.
  • Just 20 per cent of rural households own a vehicle, and only 11 per cent own a refrigerator, but 72 per cent own a phone of some sort.
  • The vast majority – over 90{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} – of rural India, does not have salaried jobs. Over half of all rural households derive their household income mainly from casual manual labour. Another 30 per cent derive it from cultivation.
  • There is a substantial difference in the standard of living of India’s Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and “others”. Fewer than five per cent of SC and ST households have a main earner who makes more than Rs 10,000 per month – for “others”, there are twice as many households.

Election Commission announces dates for assembly elections in five states

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the assembly elections in five states– Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.
  • With the Election Commission announcement the Model code of conduct has come into effect. Counting of votes for all five states will take place on 11 March 2017.

Government launches Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2017 in 500 cities

  • The Union Ministry of Urban Development launched Swachh Survekshan 2017 to rank 500 cities/towns across the country on cleanliness with a population of 1 lakh and above The survey will be conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI) under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan in a bid to encourage competition to improve sanitation.

Government approves new projects under Namami Gange for Haridwar and Varanasi  

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved new projects under Namami Gange programme in Haridwar (Uttarakhand) and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh).
  • The programme was launched to achieve the target of cleaning Ganga River in an effective manner with the unceasing involvement of all stakeholders, especially five major Ganga basin States Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
  • It envisages Sewerage Treatment Infrastructure, River Surface Cleaning, River Front Development, Public Awareness and Bio-Diversity, Afforestation.

EPFO launches a campaign to enrol more workers, sets Re 1 fine for late registration

  • Encouraging firms to enrol their workers under schemes run by retirement fund body Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), a three-month campaign has been launched beginning 1 January  2017 where employers will get amnesty and pay just Re 1 as damages for not registering their employees earlier.
  • To be called ‘Enrollment and Establishment coverage campaign 2017’.

Finland First Country to introduces basic income for unemployed

  • Finland has become the first country in the world to pay a basic income to randomly picked citizens on a national level in an aiming at dismissing poverty, motivate people to join work force and decrease unemployment.

West Bengal’s longest free WiFi-enabled road:

  • West Bengal”s longest free WiFi-enabled road has become operational.
  • Free WiFi will be available over the entire stretch on Biswa Bangla Sarani covering a distance of 13.5km.
  • The step has been taken to facilitate IT professionals who travel along the road to their workplaces.

Google introduces tools for small businesses in India

  • Google India has created two tools  My Business and Digital Unlocked for the small and medium businesses in India,that would help to create an online presence, besides a digital training programme.

APPOINTMENT

Justice JS Khehar sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar was sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He was administered oath to the office by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • With this, he became the first person from Sikh communitry to become the CJI.

RBI appoints Surekha Marandi as executive director

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Surekha Marandi as its Executive Director (ED).
  • She was appointed in place of U S Paliwal who retired on December 31, 2016.
