Alexander Van der Bellen elected Austrian President

  • Independent candidate and pro-European Alexander Van der Bellen has won the Austria’s re-run presidential election with around 53.5{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} votes.
  • He had won an earlier election in May by a narrow margin after which it was declared void by the Constitutional Court due to irregularities.

India to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots

  • India has agreed to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots, boosting growing defence ties between both countries.
  • In this regard agreement was signed during bilateral discussions between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Vietnamese counterpart, General Ngo Xuan Lich in New Delhi.
  • India and Vietnam have steadily stepping up their cooperation, especially in defence sector, against the backdrop of the growing assertiveness of China in the Southeast and South Asai region.

Bernard Cazeneuve named the new French prime minister

  • Bernard Cazeneuve, currently French interior minister, will replace Manuel Valls as the country’s new prime minister.
  • Valls is stepping down in order to seek the Socialist Party’s nomination to be its presidential candidate in the 2017 election.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev elected Uzbekistan President

  • Uzbekistan’s Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev became the country’s second president after winning 88.61{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} vote in the first presidential election since the death of the authoritarian leader and President Islam Karimov.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa passes away

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaraman passed away at a Chennai hospital on 05th December 2016, the 68-year old AIADMK supremo breathed her last at 11:30 PM at the Apollo Hospital.
  • She had suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016 following complaints of fever and dehydration, but she never fully recovered.
  • Extra police have been deployed in the southern state amid fears of unrest among her supporters.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee were among those attending the state funeral.
  • Her grave is located next to that of her mentor, MG Ramachandran.

O Panneerselvam sworn in as new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

  • After the demise of AIADMK supremo & Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Apollo Hospital, her loyalist O Panneerselvam has been sworn in as Chief Minister at a sombre ceremony at the Raj Bhawan along with all the ministers in the erstwhile Jayalalithaa Cabinet.
  • The AIADMK MLAs met at the party headquarters to elect Mr Panneerselvam as the successor to Jayalalithaa.
  • This is for third time he has sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
  • Earlier he had served CM for two brief periods from 2001-02 and 2014-15 after Jayalalithaa was unseated from the post by the courts on various grounds.
  • Panneerselvam has been a trusted aide of AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa. After her death, he was elected the leader of the Legislature Party.
  • Previously in Jayalalithaa’s government he had served as Minister of Revenue Department (March 2002 to December 2002), Minister for Public Works (December 2002 to May 2006) and Finance Minister (May 2011 to September 2014).


Amazon launches global startup program ‘Launchpad’ in India

  • The program will enable Indian startups to sell their products overseas.
  • Amazon India has tied up with Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP)’s Start Up India and NASSCOM.
  • Amazon also has partnered with NASSCOM’s 10,000 Startups and Indian Angel Network (IAN) along with NITI Aayog, Governments of Maharashtra, Telangana and TiE to help roll in startups.
  • For a fee of Rs 5,000 a month, startups can get access to Amazon’s seller support services such as account management, marketing and warehouse management among others.
  • Around 25 startups such as Witworks, Leaf Wearables, Ducere Technologies and Seventh Sense Technologies have already joined the programme.
  • India is the seventh country where Launchpad has started.
  • Other countries include the US, Germany, China, France and UK, among others.

MMTC to tie-up with SBI to sell govt minted ‘Indian Gold Coin’

  • India’s largest public sector trading body MMTC(Metals and Minerals Trading gold Corporation) tie-up with the State Bank of India (SBI) to sell government-minted Indian Gold Coin(24 Karat)which will be available in denominations of 5gm, 10gm and 20 gm bar.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the coin on November 5, 2015.
  • MMTC has tied up with 7 banks Indian Overseas Bank, Vijaya Bank, Federal Bank, Yes Bank, Andhra Bank, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank)  to sell it.

About The Indian Gold coin

  • The coin is India’s first-ever sovereign gold offering and the only one to be hallmarked by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for purity.
  • The creation of a national-branded coin, of uniform price and quality, has addressed the trust deficit that exists around the buying and selling of gold.
  • It aligns with the ‘Make in India’priority of the government.
  • The coin has the national emblem Ashoka Chakra engraved on one side and Mahatma Gandhi on the other.
  • Its other unique features include 24 Karat 999 fineness purity, positive tolerance both in weight and purity, tamper proof packaging and advanced anti-counterfeit features.

India crosses $300 billion milestone in FDI

  • India has received over US $300 billion US Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) milestone between April 2000 and September 2016.
  • The cumulative FDI inflows during the period amounted to US $310.26 billion.
  • With this, India firmly established its credentials as a safe investment destination in the world.
  • 33{be19e8fcc7081f751eba9e03bd22e904e5cf3e86733381e655a03b1ab7839769} of the FDI came through the Mauritius route.
  • India received US $101.76 billion dollar from Mauritius between April 2000 and September 2016.
  • Besides Mauritius, other big investors have been from Singapore, US, UK and the Netherlands


Prez Mukherjee to inaugurate 1st ever International Gita Mahotsav

  • President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the first ever International Gita Mahotsav in Kurukshetra, Haryana today.
  • The President will also lay the foundation stone of Krishna circuit on the occasion. In a five-day mega event, many spiritual leaders from different religions, scholars and artists from various countries will participate.
  • The Mahotsav will set a world record with the recitation of Ashtadash Shaloki Gita by as many as 18 thousand students at one go.
  • Religious leaders from other communities too took part in the seminar, titled  ‘Bhagavad Gita: Holistic Life Management and World Heritage Tourism’.
  • A new train was started today between Kurukshetra and Mathura.


Researchers found novel route to discover new drug targets

  • Researchers from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Delhi have found a novel route to discover new drug targets and potential drugs.
  • These new drug targets route and potential drugs are mainly for parasites such as Loa loa nematode (roundworm) and Schistosoma mansoni platyhelminths (flatworm) that cause several diseases


Joint maritime exercise ‘Konkan 16’ between India and UK begins

  • The annual bilateral maritime exercise Konkan 16 between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy (British Navy) started in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • It will familiarise navies of both countries with each other’s planning processes and further enhance synergy and inter-operability.
  • The second phase is a LIVE EXERCISE (LIVEX) will be held from 12 to 16 December 2016 at Goa.


B S Bhullar appointed Chief of Directorate General of Civil Aviation

  • Senior IAS officer B.S. Bhullar has been appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Justice JS Khehar appointed 44th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar (64) will be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • He will be the 44th CJI and shall succeed Chief Justice TS Thakur who retires on January 3, 2016.
  • He will be the first Sikh to become the CJI.
